Will Moore, PCA Alumnus, Publishes Children’s Book ‘Aardvarks in the Dark’

Prattville Christian Academy alumnus of the Class of 2008, Will Moore, has recently published his first children’s book, Aardvarks in the Dark, a story designed to spark curiosity and delight in young readers.

When asked what inspired him to write, Moore shared that reading to his daughter each night played a big role. “Seeing how much she loved books was a big inspiration for me. While she really enjoys Aardvarks in the Dark, her true favorite will always be anything from the Fancy Nancy series,” he said.

Moore’s fascination with aardvarks also helped shape the book. “Since there were hardly any children’s books about them, I thought, why not give it a try?” he explained. The story became a unique collaboration when one of his former students, now an 8th grader at Montgomery Academy, illustrated the book. “I gave her complete creative freedom, and she did a phenomenal job,” Moore said. For publishing, he partnered with Rocky Heights, a self-publishing company in Birmingham. “They were incredibly knowledgeable and easy to work with, especially for a first-time author like me.”

Geared toward children ages 0–5, Aardvarks in the Dark introduces young readers to an animal not often seen in U.S. children’s literature. Moore hopes the story and illustrations will “spark curiosity and inspire them to take a greater interest in aardvarks—or in other unique animals that God has placed on this earth.”

For students who dream of writing a book of their own one day, Moore offers simple but powerful advice: “You’re never too young to start. We all have passions and interests worth exploring. Keep a personal notebook to jot down ideas, try creating a storyboard, and share your thoughts with friends and family. Words are powerful, and they have the ability to inspire, captivate, and connect with others.”
